About this book Every day, Nuru serves coffee to strangers in a city that has learned how to look away. When rent hikes push struggling tenants to the edge, a gentle caretaker becomes the target of their anger. At work, wealthy customers complain about cold coffee while news of missing children flickers across television screens unnoticed. Around her, suffering is everywhere—yet life continues as though nothing has happened. As Nuru navigates the crowded streets of Nairobi, she begins to question the stories society tells itself about progress, morality, and civilisation. Why do ordinary people become cruel? Why does injustice become routine? Why do we remember some tragedies and forget others? And if humanity has come so far, why does so much suffering remain unchanged? Through sharp observation, dark humour, and unflinching honesty, Bizarre Civilisation explores violence, compassion, power, poverty, memory, and the quiet choices that shape who we become.
