The Algebra of Poverty: Eradicating P...

KShs2,500.00 KShs2,000.00
In Africa, there’s a prevailing desire for ease and effort and intellectual pursuits seem daunting. This phenomenon is complex and multifaceted, influenced by various historical, cultural, and socio- economic factors. The legacy of the Atlantic Slave Trade, which reduced Africans to their physical attributes, has had a lasting impact on how Africans perceive themselves and their capabilities. Today, we see young men flocking to gyms, seeking to sculpt their bodies and attain a certain physical ideal. While physical fitness is great, the emphasis on physical appearance over mental toughness and intellectual pursuits is striking. Many of these individuals, despite their physical strength, struggle with mental endurance and intellectual curiosity. Reading and learning are often neglected, leaving a void in critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This trend is concerning, as it suggests that many Africans are prioritizing short-term gains and superficial achievements over long-term growth and self-improvement. The lack of emphasis on mental development and intellectual exploration can have far- reaching consequences, including a lack of innovation, poor decision-making, and a limited capacity for complex problem-solving. The following chapters will explore these themes in more depth, acknowledging the complexities and nuances of African experiences. We’ll examine how historical and cultural factors have shaped African identities and aspirations, and how we can work to promote a culture of intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and mental resilience.

The anthology does not only seek to tell, but to show by means of photography, where we currently stand, and how we fashion for ourselves tiny bits of joy amidst the chaos that is our reality. The collection employs the use of storytelling and pictures to show a vivid nature of life as it is within Nigeria, not what it ought to be, or what it can be - just what it is and how we survive through it.
