A Battle for the Soul of a Nation

Imagine a vibrant yet deeply scarred corner of contemporary Kenya – Watu County – where the gleaming towers of Watu City cast long, deceptive shadows over neglected rural landscapes. This is the stage for “THE SINS OF NAMES,” a searing, pulse-pounding novel that rips open the dark underbelly of political greed, corporate malfeasance, and human rights abuses.

At its heart lies a profound question: What happens when the very “names” – individuals, institutions, and even abstract concepts like power and profit – conspire to sin against humanity? And who will rise to challenge them?

Meet Governor Joshua, a charismatic yet ruthless political titan, whose influence extends like a dark tendril from his opulent office, orchestrating a vast network of corruption, from siphoned public funds laundered through a church, to predatory land grabs, and even the silencing of dissent through unspeakable violence. His inner circle, a chilling ensemble of enforcers and complicit officials, believes him untouchable.

But a new generation is rising. Diana Donald, a tenacious investigative journalist, channels her personal grief and a burning desire for justice into Double D Expressions, her digital platform. Alongside her, a diverse coalition emerges: Aisha, the brilliant tech activist whose data visualizations turn whispers into digital screams; Juma, the passionate grassroots organizer from the rural interior; and Liban Nguyo, the incorruptible DCI head, whose arrival sends shivers down the spines of the corrupt. Their individual battles, sparked by a father’s fight against a fraudulent insurance giant and the brutal murder of a colleague, converge into a singular, electrifying crusade.

“THE SINS OF NAMES” is more than a story; it’s an unflinching exposé of power, a heart-wrenching testament to loss, and a breathtaking saga of triumph. It’s a novel where personal vendettas ignite public crusades, where love blossoms amidst chaos, and where every twist and turn reveals the terrifying depths of human depravity, juxtaposed against the indomitable spirit of those who dare to fight for truth and accountability.

With a powerful foreword by the one and only Prof. PLO Lumumba, this novel is not to be missed!

When a charismatic and dangerous gangster named Jim offers him a shortcut, Bob is seduced by the promise of fast money and the power it brings. The deeper he sinks into the city's criminal underworld, the further he drifts from the man Connie believes him to be. Just as he's about to lose himself completely, a ghost from home arrives with earth-shattering news: Bob is a father. Now, he has a new reason to escape, a real future to fight for. KShs1,000.00
A love forged years ago in the crucible of a sun-blasted refugee camp is put to the ultimate test when American doctor Michelle Catalane finally reunites with retired soldier Max in Nairobi. Expecting a romantic sanctuary, she steps off the plane into a city engulfed in violent riots, only to find the man she crossed an ocean for thrust back onto the front lines. Instead of the quiet suburban haven he had carefully prepared, Michelle finds herself navigating a volatile landscape of tear gas and burning barricades, watching her lover slip back into the dangerous habits of a combat veteran. Max’s heroic rescue of a terrified, lost child named Safiya from the choked streets unearths a sinister, premeditated abduction. Safiya's mother has not just gone missing in the riots; she has been snatched by Salim Duale, a vengeful Eastleigh crime lord demanding a brutal pound of flesh. As Max sheds his civilian life to hunt down the ruthless underworld boss, the tranquil home he promised Michelle transforms into a tactical command center. Caught between the violence of his military past and the suffocating disapproval of his traditional family, Max must fight a two-front war to protect the innocent and save the woman he loves. The Girl from America is an explosive, emotionally charged thriller that unflinchingly explores the collision of duty, tradition, and unconditional love. As the shadows of Nairobi's criminal underworld close in, Max and Michelle must decide if their fragile new beginning can survive the ultimate trial by fire. Max must become the ruthless operator he tried to leave behind to save a captive mother, but in doing so, he risks terrifying away the only woman who can save his soul.

THE PUPPET PROTOCOL by Ephantus Mwenda

Political / Legal Thriller
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,500.00
The President is a puppet. The nation, his stage. And the strings? They lead to the deepest, darkest corners of power, where corruption is absolute, and dissent is met with the cold kiss of a bullet. When a celebrated Chief Justice is brutally murdered for daring to expose the rot, a fractured, desperate resistance ignites. Led by the enigmatic Commander, Imani Kariuki, and her loyal, lethal Protector, Kito Mwamba, they embark on a suicide mission: to uncover a confession that could either free their country or plunge it into an irreversible abyss of civil war. But the architect of this tyranny, President Sikamoo, wields "the Hammer"-the sadistic Scar Maluki, a man who knows no limits, no mercy, and who delights in turning hope to ash. From the blood-soaked streets of Nairobi to the chilling silence of torture chambers, every whisper is a risk, every shadow a threat. As the clock ticks down, loyalties shatter, betrayals fester, and the line between hero and villain blurs. This isn't just a fight for justice; it's a desperate, no-holds-barred struggle for the very breath of a nation, where the only prize is survival, and failure means a final, bloody silence.

Birth of a Dream Weaver by Ngugi wa Thiong’o

Books, African Interest
KShs1,800.00 KShs1,490.00
Brief Summary Birth of a Dream Weaver charts the very beginnings of a writer’s creative output. In this wonderful memoir, Kenyan writer Ngugi wa Thiong’o recounts the four years he spent in Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda—threshold years where he found his voice as a playwright, journalist, and novelist, just as Uganda, Kenya, Congo, and other countries were in the final throes of their independence struggles. James Ngugi, as he was known then, is haunted by the emergency period of the previous decade in Kenya, when his friends and relatives were killed during the Mau Mau Rebellion. He is also haunted by the experience of his childhood in a polygamous family and the brave break his mother made from his father’s home. Accompanied by these ghosts, Ngugi begins to weave stories from the fibers of memory, history, and a shockingly vibrant and turbulent present. What unfolds in this moving and thought-provoking memoir is both the birth of one of the most important living writers—lauded for his "epic imagination” (Los Angeles Times)—and the death of one of the most violent episodes in global history.

Wizard of the Crow by Ngugi wa Thiongo

Books, African Interest, Kenya Fiction
Rated 3.00 out of 5
KShs3,500.00 KShs2,990.00
Brief Summary From the exiled Kenyan novelist, playwright, poet, and literary critic--a magisterial comic novel that is certain to take its place as a landmark of postcolonial African literature. In exile now for more than twenty years, Ngugi wa Thiongo has become one of the most widely read African writers of our time, the power and scope of his work garnering him international attention and praise. His aim in Wizard of the Crow is, in his own words, nothing less than "to sum up Africa of the twentieth century in the context of two thousand years of world history.” Commencing in "our times” and set in the "Free Republic of Aburiria,” the novel dramatizes with corrosive humor and keenness of observation a battle for control of the souls of the Aburirian people. Among the contenders: His High Mighty Excellency; the eponymous Wizard, an avatar of folklore and wisdom; the corrupt Christian Ministry; and the nefarious Global Bank. Fashioning the stories of the powerful and the ordinary into a dazzling mosaic, Wizard of the Crow reveals humanity in all its endlessly surprising complexity. Informed by richly enigmatic traditional African storytelling, Wizard of the Crow is a masterpiece, the crowning achievement in Ngugl wa Thiongo’s career thus far.

The Wretched Africans: A Study of Rabai and Freretown Slave Settlements by Joe Khamisi

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs1,900.00
Brief summary The Wretched Africans: A Study of Rabai and Freretown Slave Settlements. This book is about the 19th century slave trade in Eastern and Central Africa. No one in the history of humankind has suffered the indignity, abuse and pain of slavery than the African. Over many centuries, millions of Africans were uprooted from their quaint villages in the interior of the "Dark Continent" and taken into slavery. They were exported to the Americas, Asia, Arabia and a dozen other countries around the globe, to work in plantations, in the pearl industry, and as soldiers and domestic workers. Boys were castrated and made eunuchs and girls were sexually abused and forced into harems. Unfortunately, the African slave narrative - written mostly by Western historians and missionaries - has been contemptibly distorted to portray Europeans as the gallant saviors, the notorious slave traders as swaggering heroes, and the African captives as wretched victims of a horrible but regrettably inevitable human phenomenon of the time. The truth has been loftily garbled or masked and the role of liberated Africans vastly under-represented. The Wretched Africans peels of what is beneath the Arab slave trade, unravels the racism and abuse meted against Africans by European explorers and missionaries, and lays bare the heroism and resilience of the African captives. It memorializes Africans who died in caravan trails, at sea and those who found freedom in slave settlements around the world. It is a must read for historians, researchers, students and the general public wanting to understand the truth about what happened to an estimated eleven million people taken captive from the east coast of Africa to the new world and beyond.

Dust by Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor

Books, African Interest
Rated 4.00 out of 5
KShs2,500.00 KShs2,090.00
From a breathtaking new voice, a novel about a splintered family in Kenya—a story of power and deceit, unrequited love, survival and sacrifice. Odidi Oganda, running for his life, is gunned down in the streets of Nairobi. His grief-stricken sister, Ajany, just returned from Brazil, and their father bring his body back to their crumbling home in the Kenyan dry lands, seeking some comfort and peace. But the murder has stirred memories long left untouched and unleashed a series of unexpected events: Odidi and Ajany’s mercurial mother flees in a fit of rage; a young Englishman arrives at the Ogandas’ house, seeking his missing father; a hardened policeman who has borne witness to unspeakable acts reopens a cold case; and an all-seeing Trader with a murky identity plots an overdue revenge. In scenes stretching from the violent upheaval of contemporary Kenya back through a shocking political assassination in 1969 and the Mau Mau uprisings against British colonial rule in the 1950s, we come to learn the secrets held by this parched landscape, buried deep within the shared past of the family and of a conflicted nation. Here is a spellbinding novel about a brother and sister who have lost their way; about how myths come to pass, history is written, and war stains us forever.

In the House of the Interpreter by Ngugi wa Thiong’o

Books, African Interest
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,190.00
Renowned novelist, poet, playwright, and literary critic Ngugi wa Thiong’o was a student at a prestigious, British-run boarding school near Nairobi when the tumultuous Mau Mau Uprising for independence and Kenyan sovereignty gripped his country. While he enjoyed scouting trips and chess tournaments, his family home was razed to the ground and his brother, a member of the insurgency, was captured by the British and taken to a concentration camp. But Ngugi could not escape history, and eventually found himself jailed after a run in with the forces of colonialism. Ngugi richly and poignantly evokes the experiences that would transform him into a world-class writer and, as a political dissident, a moral compass to us all. A winning celebration of the implacable determination of youth and the power of hope, here is a searing account of the history of a man—and the story of a nation.

A Noble But Onerous Duty: An Autobiography by Former Director of Criminal Investigation Department (Cid) by Dr Francis K Sang

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,500.00
From a humble beginning as a son of employees in white settlers' farms in the central Rift Valley, Dr Francis K. Sang overcame many odds to rise through the ranks of the Kenya Police and become the 4th Kenyan Director of the Criminal Investigation Department. He served in this position for 4 years before he was transferred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after the changeover of government in Kenya at the end of 2002. He was tasked with the establishment of the Nairobi Secretariat to coordinate issues to do with small arms in the region. This he did and later helped transform the secretariat into the Regional Centre for Small Arms (RECSA), a regional inter-governmental body that coordinates activities aimed at controlling and reducing the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the Eastern Africa, Great Lakes and Horn of Africa region and bordering states. In this autobiography, he relates his experiences, from the difficult circumstances surrounding his birth and childhood, his struggles to get an education in spite of the many obstacles that he faced and his experiences in the police force, particularly in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) during the tenure of the 2nd President of Kenya, Daniel Arap Moi. He also relates his experiences after the NARC Government took over in 2002 and sent most senior security officers in the former government packing, either on retirement or on transfer to other less prestigious positions. He further relates how, through determination, he has been able to achieve his academic dreams which had been deferred earlier in his life owing to financial constraints, culminating in the acquisition of a PhD late in life. He also speaks about the role his family has played in enabling him to achieve all he has in his life. Reflecting on his long journey that has brought him to the place where he is today, the author also gives a number of insights on his work and life. This autobiography should serve as interesting reading to the general public as well as to persons serving in the disciplined forces, considering that it is the first from amongst persons that have served in the police force and risen through the ranks to the very top.

The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, written in collaboration with Micere Githae-Mugo, is Ngugi’s response to colonialist writings about the Mau-Mau movement, which traditionally depicted the movement and its leader, Dedan Kimathi, as mentally unbalanced and vicious. Ngugi and his collaborator choose to counter this image with a portrait of Kimathi as a man of great courage and commitment. This was how he was seen by many of the peasants and laborers of Kenya.

Against All Odds by Kalonzo Musyoka

Books, AutoBiography
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,790.00
AGAINST ALL ODDS: THE STORY OF STEPHEN KALONZO MUSYOKA, is tale of hope, courage, resilience, determination and faith. It is a story of a village boy who rose from the ashes of poverty in the dry, thirsty and forsaken part of rural Kenya into political stardom. Musyoka, the son of a peasant farmer-cum-shopkeeper, grew up in Mwingi district in Kenya’s Eastern province. His place of birth was and still remains one of the remotest regions in Kenya. The book tells the story of the journey of his life, so far. It finds its beginnings in the local village in Mwingi, where he was born. It traverses time and space to see him through the village school, high school and university, even as it gives a rendition of the various vicissitudes that informed his formative years. From there, it travels on to his early experiments with building a career in legal practice, before plunging into the mud of politics, the world of diplomacy and the challenges of statehood and statesmanship. Being his mother’s only son, Musyoka grew up under the gunfire, and terror of the Shifta bandits. His mother lived in constant fear of witchcraft. The evil eye, she thought, would take her son away. The biography tells of Musyoka’s struggles to gain meaningful education, overcome poverty and eventual entry into Kenyan politics. It narrates his rise to stardom, trials and tribulations and his strong Christian faith. It documents his crucial role as a peacemaker since his schooldays. The impact he had on the Sudanese and Somali peace negotiations. His fears, anxieties and survival instincts. It is a tale of respect for elders. A tale of a man determined to walk the straight path of truthfulness, honesty and integrity. It is a tale of a loving husband and father. It tells of his loyalty, his desire for a Kenya that is not just God fearing but free from want, poverty, corruption and hunger. His eyes are set on a country whose economy will one day compete with those of the developed world; a country whose people will walk and live free from fear of insecurity; a nation whose people will enjoy a free, high quality education, social security and good health. The biography details his political ambitions to ascend to Kenya’s presidency; his dreams, his hopes and his aspirations for Kenya. Caleb Atemi is a renowned writer, communications and public relations consultant. Atemi, a former News Editor with the Nation Media Group and journalism lecturer, is working on other biographies detailing the life and times of prominent Kenyan personalities.
