In Africa, there’s a prevailing desire for ease and
effort and intellectual pursuits seem daunting.
This phenomenon is complex and multifaceted,
influenced by various historical, cultural, and socio-
economic factors. The legacy of the Atlantic Slave Trade, which reduced Africans to their physical attributes, has had a lasting impact on how Africans perceive themselves and their capabilities.
Today, we see young men flocking to gyms, seeking
to sculpt their bodies and attain a certain physical ideal.
While physical fitness is great, the emphasis on physical appearance over mental toughness and intellectual pursuits is striking. Many of these individuals, despite their physical strength, struggle with mental endurance and intellectual curiosity. Reading and learning are often neglected, leaving a void in critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
This trend is concerning, as it suggests that
many Africans are prioritizing short-term gains and
superficial achievements over long-term growth and
self-improvement. The lack of emphasis on mental
development and intellectual exploration can have far-
reaching consequences, including a lack of innovation, poor decision-making, and a limited capacity for complex problem-solving.
The following chapters will explore these themes
in more depth, acknowledging the complexities and
nuances of African experiences. We’ll examine how
historical and cultural factors have shaped African
identities and aspirations, and how we can work to
promote a culture of intellectual curiosity, critical
thinking, and mental resilience.

Deportee: A novel by Ikenna Okeh

African Interest
KShs2,500.00
After spending two years living in Cyprus, Anayo, a Nigerian immigrant, is being deported back home, broke, stranded and without any savings to his name. Back in Nigeria he daily deals with the stigma associated with being a deportee even as he begins to re-assess everything that he had regarded as home, friendship, valid fears, love and community. With each new day in Nigeria comes new reve- lations, and nothing appears to be what he had thought them to be. This is a typical story of the hopes and expectations that sustain the drive for transcontinental migration in Africa, and one that depicts parts of the many realities that young African immigrants are confronted with.

I’ve woven tales that resonate with the spectrum of human experiences. My journey brims with intricate details, harkening back to a time when I found myself ensnared—a captive battling ceaselessly to break free from the constraints that bound me. But in my lexicon, the word “impossible” was absent; I saw it not as an obstacle, but as a catalyst for personal growth.

Khaki in the Sun

Poetry
KShs2,500.00
ABOUT THE BOOK Khaki in the sun is a poetic expression of the Nigerian experience. It shines a light on what we go through as a people, the battles we face daily in our individual capacity, as citizens living in a society where everyone lives on survival mode. The anthology does not only seek to tell, but to show by means of photography, where we currently stand, and how we fashion for ourselves tiny bits of joy amidst the chaos that is our reality. The collection employs the use of storytelling and pictures to show a vivid nature of life as it is within Nigeria, not what it ought to be, or what it can be - just what it is and how we survive through it.

So, then. You want a story and I will tell you one... Afghanistan, 1952. Abdullah and his sister Pari live with their father and stepmother in the small village of Shadbagh. Their father, Saboor, is constantly in search of work and they struggle together through poverty and brutal winters. To Abdullah, Pari - as beautiful and sweet-natured as the fairy for which she was named - is everything. More like a parent than a brother, Abdullah will do anything for her, even trading his only pair of shoes for a feather for her treasured collection. Each night they sleep together in their cot, their heads touching, their limbs tangled. One day the siblings journey across the desert to Kabul with their father. Pari and Abdullah have no sense of the fate that awaits them there, for the event which unfolds will tear their lives apart; sometimes a finger must be cut to save the hand. Crossing generations and continents, moving from Kabul, to Paris, to San Francisco, to the Greek island of Tinos, with profound wisdom, depth, insight and compassion, Khaled Hosseini writes about the bonds that define us and shape our lives, the ways in which we help our loved ones in need, how the choices we make resonate through history and how we are often surprised by the people closest to us.

Internationally acclaimed crime writer Jo Nesbø’s antihero police investigator, Harry Hole, is back: in a bone-chilling thriller that will take Hole to the brink of insanity. Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mother’s pink scarf. Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter he’s received and the disappearance of Jonas’s mother—and of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn in an increasingly terrifying game whose rules are devised—and constantly revised—by the killer. Fiercely suspenseful, its characters brilliantly realized, its atmosphere permeated with evil, The Snowman is the electrifying work of one of the best crime writers of our time. The War Within

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs995.00 KShs946.00
As violence in Iraq reaches unnerving levels in 2006, a second front in the war rages at the highest levels of the Bush administration. In his fourth book on President George W. Bush, Bob Woodward takes readers deep inside the tensions, secret debates, unofficial backchannels, distrust and determination within the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, the intelligence agencies and the U.S. military headquarters in Iraq. With unparalleled intimacy and detail, this gripping account of a president at war describes a period of distress and uncertainty within the U.S. government from 2006 through mid-2008. The White House launches a secret strategy review that excludes the military. General George Casey, the commander in Iraq, believes that President Bush does not understand the war and eventually concludes he has lost the president's confidence. The Joint Chiefs of Staff also conduct a secret strategy review that goes nowhere. On the verge of revolt, they worry that the military will be blamed for a failure in Iraq.Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice strongly opposes a surge of additional U.S. forces and confronts the president, who replies that her suggestions would lead to failure. The president keeps his decision to fire Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld from Vice President Dick Cheney until two days before he announces it. A retired Army general uses his high-level contacts to shape decisions about the war, as Bush and Cheney use him to deliver sensitive messages outside the chain of command. For months, the administration's strategy reviews continue in secret, with no deadline and no hurry, in part because public disclosure would harm Republicans in the November 2006 elections. National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley tells Rice, "We've got to do it under the radar screen because the electoral season is so hot.""The War Within" provides an exhaustive account of the struggles of General David Petraeus, who takes over in Iraq during one of the bleakest and most violent periods of the war. It reveals how breakthroughs in military operations and surveillance account for much of the progress as violence in Iraq plummets in the middle of 2007.Woodward interviewed key players, obtained dozens of never-before-published documents, and had nearly three hours of exclusive interviews with President Bush. The result is a stunning, firsthand history of the years from mid-2006, when ISBN:2147483647 Author:Bob Woodward

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs1,200.00 KShs990.00
Brief Summary The story of the orphan Oliver, who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves, shocked readers when it was first published. Dickens's tale of childhood innocence beset by evil depicts the dark criminal underworld of a London peopled by vivid and memorable characters — the arch-villain Fagin, the artful Dodger, the menacing Bill Sikes and the prostitute Nancy. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, in Oliver Twist Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery. This is the first critical edition to use the serial text of 1837-9, presenting Oliver Twist as it appeared to its earliest readers. It includes Dickens's 1841 introduction and 1850 preface, the original illustrations and a glossary of contemporary slang.

The King’s Curse

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs899.00 KShs855.00
The final novel in the Cousins’ War series, the basis for the critically acclaimed Starz miniseries, The White Queen, by #1 New York Times bestselling author and "the queen of royal fiction” (USA TODAY) Philippa Gregory tells the fascinating story of Margaret Pole, cousin to the "White Princess,” Elizabeth of York, and lady-in-waiting to Katherine of Aragon. Regarded as yet another threat to the volatile King Henry VII’s claim to the throne, Margaret Pole, cousin to Elizabeth of York (known as the White Princess) and daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, is married off to a steady and kind Lancaster supporter—Sir Richard Pole. For his loyalty, Sir Richard is entrusted with the governorship of Wales, but Margaret’s contented daily life is changed forever with the arrival of Arthur, the young Prince of Wales, and his beautiful bride, Katherine of Aragon. Margaret soon becomes a trusted advisor and friend to the honeymooning couple, hiding her own royal connections in service to the Tudors. After the sudden death of Prince Arthur, Katherine leaves for London a widow, and fulfills her deathbed promise to her husband by marrying his brother, Henry VIII. Margaret’s world is turned upside down by the surprising summons to court, where she becomes the chief lady-in-waiting to Queen Katherine. But this charmed life of the wealthiest and "holiest” woman in England lasts only until the rise of Anne Boleyn, and the dramatic deterioration of the Tudor court. Margaret has to choose whether her allegiance is to the increasingly tyrannical king, or to her beloved queen; to the religion she loves or the theology which serves the new masters. Caught between the old world and the new, Margaret Pole has to find her own way as she carries the knowledge of an old curse on all the Tudors." " ISBN:2147483647 Author:Philippa Gregory
