‘Love Told, Poetry Souled, Family Bold’ is a 3-in-1-Special authored by Sant Mark. It is a collection of snippets, short stories, flash fiction, ramblings, poetry and a play. As first works go, it reflects closely the author’s experiences and inexperiences, biases, struggle to find a voice, coming of age, imposter syndrome… good and bad, it cuts both ways.
Themes covered in the anthology include life, death, love, politics, corruption, culture, religion, and gender interplay. Perhaps, some excerpts on what is to be expected from it (trust the author to pick the bits that speak most to him).
‘Love Told’… the story bits, off ‘A Love Affair’: “She is of mixed heritage, this princess that I love. Her skin is like that of a well-tanned European, almost Arab like, and her hair Indian, jet black. Recently, though, she has taken to wearing it red, and when the sun sets, it looks like her head is on fire – in my mind, Moses and the burning bush. She could be Kikuyu, Mzungu and Kashmir, very pretty to look at.”
‘Poetry Souled’ that is attempted and tempting poetry, off ‘The Madman Dances’: “Ijakuji, ijakuja… the madman dances/ He throws his limbs this way/ He throws his limbs that way/ Makdumba, makdumba, ko ko ko…/ To an imaginary beat he twists and turns/ He is a master dance, I tell you.”
‘Family Bold’ where a family struggles with the father’s alcoholism: “… that are causing seismic contractions in my heart. God must have created you early in the morning and taken His sweet time. Not like the rest of us who were thrown here and there and declared fit for earth habitation.”
