This book, Critical Thinking, is an outgrowth of an undergraduate course that the author developed and taught at Machakos University in Kenya. It presents the definition, nature, and foundations of critical thinking. It further discusses the various schools of thought on the subject of critical thinking, a matter that underlines the broad range of debates that pertain to the subject. In this respect, it demonstrates a great deal of energy that has been expended by theorists of critical thinking on the debate on the nature of critical thinking, generating provocative, interesting and important philosophical perspectives.

The work provides students of Critical Thinking with necessary tools to cope successfully with undergraduate and graduate-level courses, and post-academic life. It contains adequate material supportive of postgraduate studies and research in critical thinking.

Bile on my Smile

Books
KShs800.00 KShs600.00
Bile on My Smile is a collection of poems authored by the youngest and most brilliant poet in Kenya. Its motivation seems to largely emanate from the poet’s childhood experiences: meditations, self-hate, self-denial, trauma, frustrations, disappointments, and failed ambitions. Reading through the poems the reader feels like being in a dark room with an invisible body that is experiencing anguish and trauma, haunted by invisible ghosts and spirits. Here is What Other’s Say Jepkorir Koech’s collection of poems Bile on My Smile vibrates with enthusiasm and valour. The poet ventures into beaten paths as well unbeaten ones in her bid to touch the instinct and intellect of her reader. Utilisation, preservation and conservation of nature for collective good certainly come out as a well-thought-out theme. This, added to philosophical concepts love, beauty, death, truth, betrayal, loss and freedom, reflects deeply on the poet’s concern for humanity’s most salient issue today: Destruction of nature and impending attendant catastrophes! The poems are a promise of hope for humanity. -Bwocha Nyagemi Bwocha, Kisii University.

The Footfalls of My Heart

African Interest
KShs1,000.00 KShs800.00
Footfalls of My Heart is a long narrative poem that draws style, idioms and expression from the culture, traditions, and philosophy of the Abagusii community of Kenya through the lens of a girl as she inches along toward marriage. In the community, marriage was a complex, long-drawn and tedious process that involved many parties including the families of the two, and peers of both the bride and groom, among many other key players. Throughout the process ran the concept of the ideal desirable partner. This poem captures the bride’s perspective of the groom, Rimura, depending on the many aspects deemed to define the ‘perfect’ rimura. Nyamwange’s Footfalls of My Heart is a bride’s response to his earlier publication, The Girl of Red Beauty which presented a bride’s dreams of an ideal wife, in the tradition set by Okot p’Bitek’s twin publications, Song of Lawino and Song of Ocol. What Others Say "This is truly beautiful. I enjoyed the stream of consciousness and wordplay, which powerfully built up the feeling behind the words. I love how the author writes with some alliteration and sensory descriptions. I loved the imagery here: ‘The ring of bellyful laughter, ‘The beaming of a full moon on my face’ Is this a poem or a story I can't even tell!!! Why not both? It feels like the subject matter happened once upon a time.” - Chasejameson Manar Spears, Poet, Oakland, California, USA “The author has set a high standard to which African poetry should be written. Taking after Okot p’Bitek, the author has, however, heightened the language and the condensation of the expressions.” – Dr. Chris Okemwa, lecturer, Kisii University and poet

A Historical and Cultural Analysis of Women Land Rights in Kisii Count, Kenya, 1895- 1970

History and Autobiographies
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,800.00
In most societies in different parts of the world, there are gender inequalities in access to productive resources such as land, and other social, economic, and environmental resources that are critical for people’s sustenance. However, in many instances, not much research has been conducted on those critical gender issues and perceived unfairness in the ownership, access, and utilization of critical societal resources, particularly, in Africa in general, and Kenya in particular. In this regard, the need to improve access to land and strengthen women’s land rights in Africa provided the main rationale for undertaking this research, with specific reference to the Gusii of Western Kenya. In particular, the book examines the changing and/or evolving responses of women over time to land access, ownership, control, and usage. Further, the book analyzes the relationship between indigenous land tenure systems and gendered relations; and the effects of colonial land policies on gendered relations. It also examines gender rights with respect to land access and ownership in the post-colonial period in Kisii. Overall, this study provides pertinent information on the following critical issues. What was the relationship between pre-colonial land tenure systems and gender relations in Kisii? What were the effects of colonial and post-colonial land policies on gender relations in Gusii? How did Gusii women respond to gendered land rights and ownership in the pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial periods?

Jahenda the Teenager Mother

Kids & Teens
KShs1,000.00 KShs800.00
Jahenda, the Teenage Mother is a coming-of-age story about Jahenda, the protagonist and a Form-two student at Chavavo Secondary school, who believes education is her key to success. Like most teenage girls, she vows not to be distracted by teenage love, but when Alan, a handsome and charming young man, shows interest in her, she is tamed by his charm and falls head over heels in love with him. Yielding to the temptations of love, Jahenda makes the biggest blunder in her life when she becomes pregnant and, as a result, is expelled from school, an outcome which derails her dreams for success. That is not all! She is shunned by most people in her rural community and must confront the stigma of having a child outside wedlock. To make matters worse, when Alan, the very young man responsible for her pregnancy, dies unexpectedly after a snake bite, this young mother finds herself at a crossroads in her life. What makes Jahenda’s story a compelling read, therefore, is her ability to harness her inner ambitions to emerge from her fix by doing the unthinkable and defying societal norms to save herself. What a cautionary tale! Will this teen mother’s last act be her saving grace?

Accidental Empires

Books, Business
KShs1,495.00 KShs1,421.00
Computer manufacturing is--after cars, energy production and illegal drugs--the largest industry in the world, and it's one of the last great success stories in American business. Accidental Empires is the trenchant, vastly readable history of that industry, focusing as much on the astoundingly odd personalities at its core--Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Mitch Kapor, etc. and the hacker culture they spawned as it does on the remarkable technology they created. Cringely reveals the manias and foibles of these men (they are always men) with deadpan hilarity and cogently demonstrates how their neuroses have shaped the computer business. But Cringely gives us much more than high-tech voyeurism and insider gossip. From the birth of the transistor to the mid-life crisis of the computer industry, he spins a sweeping, uniquely American saga of creativity and ego that is at once uproarious, shocking and inspiring. Nudge by Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein

Books, Business
KShs2,890.00 KShs2,500.00
Every day, we make decisions on topics ranging from personal investments to schools for our children to the meals we eat to the causes we champion. Unfortunately, we often choose poorly. The reason, the authors explain, is that, being human, we all are susceptible to various biases that can lead us to blunder. Our mistakes make us poorer and less healthy; we often make bad decisions involving education, personal finance, health care, mortgages and credit cards, the family, and even the planet itself. Thaler and Sunstein invite us to enter an alternative world, one that takes our humanness as a given. They show that by knowing how people think, we can design choice environments that make it easier for people to choose what is best for themselves, their families, and their society. Using colorful examples from the most important aspects of life, Thaler and Sunstein demonstrate how thoughtful "choice architecture” can be established to nudge us in beneficial directions without restricting freedom of choice. Nudge offers a unique new take—from neither the left nor the right—on many hot-button issues, for individuals and governments alike. This is one of the most engaging and provocative books to come along in many years.

Permission Marketing

Books, Business
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,890.00
The man Business Week calls "the ultimate entrepreneur for the Information Age" explains "Permission Marketing"—the groundbreaking concept that enables marketers to shape their message so that consumers will willingly accept it. Whether it is the TV commercial that breaks into our favorite program, or the telemarketing phone call that disrupts a family dinner, traditional advertising is based on the hope of snatching our attention away from whatever we are doing. Seth Godin calls this Interruption Marketing, and, as companies are discovering, it no longer works. Instead of annoying potential customers by interrupting their most coveted commodity—time—Permission Marketing offers consumers incentives to accept advertising voluntarily. Now this Internet pioneer introduces a fundamentally different way of thinking about advertising products and services. By reaching out only to those individuals who have signaled an interest in learning more about a product, Permission Marketing enables companies to develop long-term relationships with customers, create trust, build brand awareness -- and greatly improve the chances of making a sale. How The Mighty Fall by Jim Collins

Books, Business
KShs3,990.00 KShs3,190.00
Brief Summary Decline can be avoided. Decline can be detected. Decline can be reversed. Amidst the desolate landscape of fallen great companies, Jim Collins began to wonder: How do the mighty fall? Can decline be detected early and avoided? How far can a company fall before the path toward doom becomes inevitable and unshakable? How can companies reverse course? In How the Mighty Fall, Collins confronts these questions, offering leaders the well-founded hope that they can learn how to stave off decline and, if they find themselves falling, reverse their course. Collins' research project—more than four years in duration—uncovered five step-wise stages of decline: Stage 1: Hubris Born of Success Stage 2: Undisciplined Pursuit of More Stage 3: Denial of Risk and Peril Stage 4: Grasping for Salvation Stage 5: Capitulation to Irrelevance or Death By understanding these stages of decline, leaders can substantially reduce their chances of falling all the way to the bottom. Great companies can stumble, badly, and recover. Every institution, no matter how great, is vulnerable to decline. There is no law of nature that the most powerful will inevitably remain at the top. Anyone can fall and most eventually do. But, as Collins' research emphasizes, some companies do indeed recover—in some cases, coming back even stronger—even after having crashed into the depths of Stage 4. Decline, it turns out, is largely self-inflicted, and the path to recovery lies largely within our own hands. We are not imprisoned by our circumstances, our history, or even our staggering defeats along the way. As long as we never get entirely knocked out of the game, hope always remains. The mighty can fall, but they can often rise again"

Egonomics

Books, Business
KShs1,295.00 KShs1,231.00
The Questions"Arrogant, self-centered, stubborn, " and "insecure" -- words that most people associate with ego. But in this original, eye-opening work, authors David Marcum and Steven Smith argue that the upside of ego is as powerful as the downside and answer questions about ego that have been a mystery to most people. In his landmark book, "Good to Great, " Jim Collins showed that one of two key traits defined leaders who transformed organizations from good to great: humility. But if humility is so powerful, why don't more of us have it? Why does ego allow us to reach good results but never great ones, unless balanced by humility? Why do we need ego to personally succeed, while having it often interferes with the success we pursue? The Answers Using five years of exhaustive research, Marcum and Smith provide compelling evidence and matter-of-fact answers on striking the balance between ego and humility to reach the next level of leadership. The authors include case studies to illustrate how ego subtly interferes with success but also how ego sparks the drive to achieve, the nerve to try something new, and the tenacity to conquer adversity. The Early Warning Signs We all have moments when ego costs us everything from an honest conversation to a job or promotion. Through cross-disciplinary research, egonomics reveals how to detect four early warning signs that ego is becoming a liability, including how: - being too competitive makes you less competitive - defending ideas turns into defending yourself - winning ideas can be halted by the creator's own intelligence and talent - desiring respect and recognition can interfere with success The Keys to Egonomic Health Three key principles keep ego healthy: - humility: striking the crucial balance between too much ego and not enough - curiosity: blending free thinking and discipline without bias - veracity: removing fear of giving or getting feedback to produce water-cooler honesty With a clear focus on elevating the way you do business, "egonomics" is a liberating approach to becoming a rare and respected leader. Blue Ocean Strategy by Renée Mauborgne and W Chan Kim Hardcover

Books, Business
KShs6,500.00 KShs5,500.00
The global phenomenon, embraced by business worldwide and now published in more than 40 languages. This international bestseller challenges everything you thought you knew about the requirements for strategic success. Since the dawn of the industrial age, companies have engaged in head-to-head competition in search of sustained, profitable growth. They have fought for competitive advantage, battled over market share, and struggled for differentiation. Yet, as this influential and immensely popular book shows, these hallmarks of competitive strategy are not the way to create profitable growth in the future. In the international bestseller Blue Ocean Strategy, W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne argue that cutthroat competition results in nothing but a bloody red ocean of rivals fighting over a shrinking profit pool. Based on a study of 150 strategic moves (spanning more than 100 years across 30 industries), the authors argue that lasting success comes not from battling competitors, but from creating "blue oceans"—untapped new market spaces ripe for growth. Such strategic moves, which the authors call "value innovation,” create powerful leaps in value that often render rivals obsolete for more than a decade. Blue Ocean Strategy presents a systematic approach to making the competition irrelevant and outlines principles and tools any company can use to create and capture their own blue oceans. A landmark work that upends traditional thinking about strategy, this bestselling business book charts a bold new path to winning the future. "

Thrive by Arianna Huffington

Books, Business
KShs1,990.00 KShs1,790.00
Brief Summary In Thrive, Arianna Huffington makes an impassioned and compelling case for the need to redefine what it means to be successful in today's world. Arianna Huffington's personal wake-up call came in the form of a broken cheekbone and a nasty gash over her eye -- the result of a fall brought on by exhaustion and lack of sleep. As the cofounder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group -- one of the fastest growing media companies in the world -- celebrated as one of the world's most influential women, and gracing the covers of magazines, she was, by any traditional measure, extraordinarily successful. Yet as she found herself going from brain MRI to CAT scan to echocardiogram, to find out if there was any underlying medical problem beyond exhaustion, she wondered is this really what success feels like? As more and more people are coming to realize, there is far more to living a truly successful life than just earning a bigger salary and capturing a corner office. Our relentless pursuit of the two traditional metrics of success -- money and power -- has led to an epidemic of burnout and stress-related illnesses, and an erosion in the quality of our relationships, family life, and, ironically, our careers. In being connected to the world 24/7, we're losing our connection to what truly matters. Our current definition of success is, as Thrive shows, literally killing us. We need a new way forward. In a commencement address Arianna gave at Smith College in the spring of 2013, she likened our drive for money and power to two legs of a three-legged stool. They may hold us up temporarily, but sooner or later we're going to topple over. We need a third leg -- a third metric for defining success -- to truly thrive. That third metric, she writes in Thrive, includes our well-being, our ability to draw on our intuition and inner wisdom, our sense of wonder, and our capacity for compassion and giving. As Arianna points out, our eulogies celebrate our lives very differently from the way society defines success. They don't commemorate our long hours in the office, our promotions, or our sterling PowerPoint presentations as we relentlessly raced to climb up the career ladder. They are not about our resumes -- they are about cherished memories, shared adventures, small kindnesses and acts of generosity, lifelong passions, and the things that made us laugh. In this deeply personal book, Arianna talks candidly about her own challenges with managing time and prioritizing the demands of a career and raising two daughters -- of juggling business deadlines and family crises, a harried dance that led to her collapse and to her "aha moment." Drawing on the latest groundbreaking research and scientific findings in the fields of psychology, sports, sleep, and physiology that show the profound and transformative effects of meditation, mindfulness, unplugging, and giving, Arianna shows us the way to a revolution in our culture, our thinking, our workplace, and our lives.""" What the CEO Wants You to Know

Books, Business
KShs2,500.00 KShs2,190.00
Brief Summary The universal laws of business success . . . no matter whether you are selling fruit from a stand or running a Fortune 500 company. Have you ever noticed that the business savvy of the world's best CEOs seems like a kind of street smarts? They sense where the opportunities are and how to take advantage of them. And their companies make money consistently, year after year. How different is it to run a big company than to sell fruit from a cart or run a small shop in a village? In essence, not very, according to Ram Charan. From his childhood in India, where he worked in his family's shoe shop, to his education at Harvard Business School and his daily work advising many of the world's best CEOs, Ram understands business as few can. The best CEOs have a knack for bringing the most complex business down to the fundamentals -- the same fundamentals of the family shoe shop. They have business acumen -- the ability to focus on the basics and make money for the company. What the CEO Wants You to Know captures these insights and explains in clear, simple language how to do what great CEOs do instinctively and persistently: * Understand the basic building blocks of a business and use them to figure out how your company makes money and operates as a total business. * Decide what to do, despite the clutter of day-to-day business and the complexity of the real world. Many people spend more than a hundred thousand dollars on an MBA without learning to pull these pieces of the puzzle together. Many others lack a formal business education and feel shut out from the executive suite. What the CEO Wants You to Know takes the mystery out of business and shows the secrets of success used by business legends like Jack Welch of GE." ISBN:9789944326094 Author:Ram Charan
