SYNOPSIS:
In the cold misty hills of Dudi, Nyanza, 13-year-old Baraka walks 2km to school every morning in a torn sweater. One freezing July morning, he finds a beautiful brown coat hanging on the school fence. No one is watching.
The temptation is strong. He borrows it “just for one day.”
That one day becomes one week. One small secret becomes a mountain of lies. He lies to his friends that his uncle bought it from Nairobi. He lies to his own mother that the school gave it as a prize for being top in class.
Meanwhile, Mr. Otieno the school watchman – the real owner who saved for six months to buy the coat – is shivering on night duty.
Baraka cannot sleep. He dreams the coat is talking. His best friend Otis feels hurt. Every time Principal announces the lost coat, Baraka’s heart beats fast.
Will Baraka find the courage to tell the truth? Will Mr. Otieno forgive him? What is more valuable – a coat or a good name?
