Heroes & Villains of The 1982 Coup Attempt In Kenya by Simon Mbatia

On the morning of 1 August 1982, Kenya awoke to gunfire, confusion, and fear as an attempted military coup threatened to alter the nation’s future. Within hours, loyalties were tested, lives were forever changed, and the fate of a young republic hung in the balance.

In Heroes & Villains, Major (Rtd.) Simon Mbatia Kamau takes readers beyond the headlines to recount one of the most defining moments in Kenya’s history. Drawing on personal experience, historical research, and court records, he offers a compelling insider’s account of the courage, betrayal, patriotism, and sacrifice that shaped the failed coup and its aftermath.

More than a military memoir, this is a thoughtful reflection on leadership, constitutional duty, justice, and the enduring cost of political conflict. It explores not only the events of that fateful day but also their impact on soldiers, families, students, and the nation itself.

Honest, insightful, and deeply human, Heroes & Villains is a powerful contribution to Kenya’s historical record and a reminder that the choices of a few can shape the destiny of millions.

Some stories fade with time. Others become part of a nation’s conscience.
