Description

A love that defies ancient laws. A sacrifice that echoes across generations.

Beneath the waves lies a hidden kingdom ruled by laws older than time itself. Princess Uzna, a powerful jinn bound by duty, has sworn to protect her realm from the corruption of the human world. But when fate leads her to the shores of Zanzibar, she meets Talon—a man driven by ambition, resilience, and an unshakable spirit—and everything changes.

Their connection is immediate. Dangerous. Forbidden.

Uzna’s kind do not love humans, yet she risks her crown, her freedom, and her magic to be with him. When she bears twins born of two worlds, her kingdom calls her home to face judgment. Her punishment: exile within a sealed prison beneath the sea, restrained by a magic-suppressing collar. Her vow: to return to Talon, no matter how long it takes.

The Price of Immortality

Time moves differently for mortals and immortals. While Uzna remains untouched by age, Talon grows old beneath a mysterious curse, waiting for the woman who never returns. Their children, Zamir and Amani, grow up caught between worlds—too human for the jinn, too magical for mankind.

Branded as outcasts, they rise as fierce warriors determined to free their mother. When diplomacy fails, they wage war against the ancient laws of their own people.

Their victory finally breaks Uzna’s chains… but freedom comes too late.

Talon is gone.

His long wait is over, but his love endures beyond death itself. Consumed by grief, Uzna abandons the throne that condemned her and builds a new kingdom—one where love is no longer bound by blood, magic, or fear.

The Sex Lives of African Women by Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah

Books, African Interest, Fiction and Non Fiction, Women
KShs2,290.00 KShs1,990.00
The Sex Lives of African Women uniquely amplifies individual women from across the African continent and its global diaspora, as they speak of their diverse experiences of sex, sexualities and relationships. Many of the women who tell their stories in this collection recall the journeys they have travelled in order to own their own sexualities. They do this by grappling with experiences of child sexual abuse, resisting the religious edicts of their childhood, and by asserting their sexual power. From finding queer community in Egypt to living a polyamorous life in Senegal to understanding the intersectionality of religion and pleasure in Cameroon to choosing to leave relationships that no longer serve them, these narratives are as individual and illuminating as the women who share them. No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe

Books, African Interest
KShs890.00 KShs790.00
The second book in Achebe’s "African trilogy”: A classic story of personal and moral struggle as well as turbulent social conflict. When Obi Okonkwo—grandson of Okonkwo, the main character in Things Fall Apart—returns to Nigeria from England in the 1950s, his foreign education separates him from his African roots. He’s becoming a part of a ruling elite whose corruption he finds repugnant. Forced to choose between traditional values and the demands of a changing world, he finds himself trapped between the expectations of his family, his village, and the larger society around him. With unequaled clarity and poignancy, Chinua Achebe’s No Longer at Ease remains a brilliant statement of the challenges facing Nigeria today.

How to Read the Air by Dinaw Mengestu

Books, African Interest
KShs1,590.00 KShs1,450.00
A heartbreaking literary masterwork about love, family, and the power of imagination, which confirms Mengestu's reputation as one of the brightest talents of his generation. Dinaw Mengestu's first novel, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears, earned the young writer comparisons to Bellow, Fitzgerald, and Naipaul, and garnered ecstatic critical praise and awards around the world for its haunting depiction of the immigrant experience. Now Mengestu enriches the themes that defined his debut with a heartbreaking literary masterwork about love, family, and the power of imagination, which confirms his reputation as one of the brightest talents of his generation. One early September afternoon, Yosef and Mariam, young Ethiopian immigrants who have spent all but their first year of marriage apart, set off on a road trip from their new home in Peoria, Illinois, to Nashville, Tennessee, in search of a new identity as an American couple. Soon, their son, Jonas, will be born in Illinois. Thirty years later, Yosef has died, and Jonas needs to make sense of the volatile generational and cultural ties that have forged him. How can he envision his future without knowing what has come before? Leaving behind his marriage and job in New York, Jonas sets out to retrace his mother and father's trip and weave together a family history that will take him from the war-torn Ethiopia of his parents' youth to his life in the America of today, a story - real or invented - that holds the possibility of reconciliation and redemption.

The Cape Cod Bicycle War and Other Stories by Billy Kahora

Books, African Interest
KShs1,990.00
The Cape Cod Bicycle War explores the wild promises of city life as seen for the first time; and its brutality once one has settled in. The author explores the lives of drunks and zealots, farmers and whistle-blowers, locals and migrants, rich and poor. Kahora’s visceral writing style coupled with his typical urbane Kenyans, is not very different from his personality. The wry sense of humour in his stories came out during the book launch where he did a reading. He is unapologetically Kenyan in his description of personal experiences that also poked fun at society. The short stories are sequenced in respective order of their setting in the history of the country. The first story, We are Here Because We are Here, is a flashback to an era gone, in a rural setting as opposed to the rest of the stories in the collection which are set in a more urbane setting marked by excesses of indulgence, religion and the rat race. The story serves as a primer to life in pre-colonial times juxtaposed with current life as narrated to a young man by his ailing grandfather. It tackles natural disasters like floods with a background story of how these disasters came about as a result of exploitation by the colonisers in the Scramble for Africa. It has great historical depth, testament to Kahora's industriousness as a researcher. Set on the Coast of Kenya, it explores the history of the Pokomo community of Tana River County, who we learn hail from the Comoros. It also explores the flooding of the Tana River, which causes starvation and displacement of families.

Happiness by Aminatta Forna

Books, African Interest
KShs1,990.00 KShs1,790.00
London. A fox makes its way across Waterloo Bridge. The distraction causes two pedestrians to collide--Jean, an American studying the habits of urban foxes, and Attila, a Ghanaian psychiatrist there to deliver a keynote speech. From this chance encounter, Aminatta Forna's unerring powers of observation show how in the midst of the rush of a great city lie numerous moments of connection. Attila has arrived in London with two tasks: to deliver a keynote speech on trauma, as he has done many times before; and to contact the daughter of friends, his "niece" who hasn't called home in a while. Ama has been swept up in an immigration crackdown, and now her young son Tano is missing. When, by chance, Attila runs into Jean again, she mobilizes the network of rubbish men she uses as volunteer fox spotters. Security guards, hotel doormen, traffic wardens--mainly West African immigrants who work the myriad streets of London--come together to help. As the search for Tano continues, a deepening friendship between Attila and Jean unfolds. Meanwhile a consulting case causes Attila to question the impact of his own ideas on trauma, the values of the society he finds himself in, and a grief of his own. In this delicate tale of love and loss, of cruelty and kindness, Forna asks us to consider the interconnectedness of lives, our co-existence with one another and all living creatures, and the true nature of happiness.

The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,790.00
In contemporary Sierra Leone, a devastating civil war has left an entire populace with secrets to keep. In the capital hospital, a gifted young surgeon is plagued by demons that are beginning to threaten his livelihood. Elsewhere in the hospital lies a dying man who was young during the country’s turbulent postcolonial years and has stories to tell that are far from heroic. As past and present intersect in the buzzing city, these men are drawn unwittingly closer by a British psychologist with good intentions, and into the path of one woman at the center of their stories. A work of breathtaking writing and rare wisdom, The Memory of Love seamlessly weaves together two generations of African life to create a story of loss, absolution, and the indelible effects of the past—and, in the end, the very nature of love.
