Chimurenga is a searing debut that reads like history, prophecy, and

thriller all at once. From exiled military generals plotting in dim safe houses

to restless students setting streets ablaze with defiance, Mr. Muhindo

Maka, with literary ingeniousness, paints an unflinching portrait of a

nation that is caught between history and betrayal. With prose that is

lyrical and unrelenting, he asks what becomes of freedom when liberators

turn into jailers, and whether truth–no matter how long buried–can rise

again. Chimurenga is not just a novel but a great philosophical, literary

and cinematic reckoning.

Description

CHIMURENGA- Muhindo Maka ” Pen Rebel”

Right now across Africa, there is an undercurrent of change taking place politically.  Where the continent’s youth, who are the majority,  are questioning the way their countries are led. Why should Africans be in poverty as their leaders amass wealth that they store in offshore accounts? Why should Africa’s minerals be taken forcefully by the West or through corrupt deals, while the villagers whose land it is are chased or massacred? Why should dictators who have had a grip for decades..be allowed to continue ruling?

This book is set squarely into that issue. And even though it’s set in a fiction county called Ganda, one could assume that it speaks of Uganda. Even though tens of African countries could claim it as their own because of how relatable it is.

In “Chimurenga” we see a country that is ruled by a dictator for over 40 years. His rule started off with a lot of hope. But as the decades go by, and  development trickles little by little, as corruption increases- people get tired. They want a country that works for them. That works for everyone,  not just the elite few.

But who will slay the dragon? Or rather, how? This is a question that several characters in the book seek to answer. We have Colonel Gwanga and his exiled friends who see the way forward being to start small, and end it with toppling down the regime.

And what follows is an action paced turn of events that leave everybody in the saga caught unawares. Foreign nations join the fray, while university students risk their lives for their country.

And as usual with African dictators,  blood is spilt.  Over and over again. The presidents always assume that when people see bodies piled up, that they will cower in fear. That when they hear of their comrades who have been abducted and tortured, that they will be afraid of protesting.

But the youth in this  book don’t cower. Even when the media does. Even when they are all they have. They fight for themselves to the end. They fight for their future with everything they’ve got.

What I liked most about this book, was just how realistic it is, while also being interesting. It’s like reading nonfiction written like fiction. I’ve had to read it in one sitting because once I started I couldn’t put it down,  I wanted to know what happens next. But above all, I wanted the opposition to win. I wanted those people meeting in the dark to strategize,  to one day behold freedom.

And I’m glad the author gave us the ending this book has. The ending allows us as African youth to dream. To hope. To imagine. That maybe, our asks are not that outrageous. That with the right person, concepts like Justice, education and health for all, will not be things only a few access. That a country can work for everyone.

As you can tell, I enjoyed this read. It’s full of struggle that we African youth are familiar with. But it’s also full of hope. All while being interesting.

The Godfather of Kathmandu

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs899.00 KShs855.00
Sonchai Jitpleecheep--John Burdett's inimitable Royal Thai Police detective with the hard-bitten demeanor and the Buddhist soul--is summoned to the most shocking and intriguing crime scene of his career. Solving the murder could mean a promotion, but Sonchai, reeling from a personal tragedy, is more interested in Tietsin, an exiled Tibetan lama based in Kathmandu who has become his guru. There are, however, obstacles in Sonchai's path to nirvana. Police Colonel Vikorn has just named Sonchai his consigliere (he's been studying "The Godfather" on DVD): to troubleshoot, babysit, defuse, procure, reconnoiter--do whatever needs to be done in Vikorn's ongoing battle with Army General Zinna for control of Bangkok's network of illegal enterprises. And though Tietsin is enlightened and (eerily) charismatic, he also has forty million dollars' worth of heroin for sale. If Sonchai truly wants to be an initiate into Tietsin's "apocalyptic Buddhism," he has to pull off a deal that will bring Vikorn and Zinna to the same side of the table. Further complicating the challenge is Tara: a Tantric practitioner who captivates Sonchai with her remarkable otherworldly techniques. Here is Sonchai put to the extreme test--as a cop, as a Buddhist, as an impossibly earthbound man--in John Burdett's most wildly inventive, darkly comic, and wickedly entertaining novel yet" ISBN:2147483647 Author:John Burdett

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,790.00
Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein when she was only eighteen. At once a Gothic thriller, a passionate romance, and a cautionary tale about the dangers of science, Frankenstein tells the story of committed science student Victor Frankenstein. Obsessed with discovering the cause of generation and life and bestowing animation upon lifeless matter, Frankenstein assembles a human being from stolen body parts but; upon bringing it to life, he recoils in horror at the creature's hideousness. Tormented by isolation and loneliness, the once-innocent creature turns to evil and unleashes a campaign of murderous revenge against his creator, Frankenstein. Frankenstein, an instant bestseller and an important ancestor of both the horror and science fiction genres, not only tells a terrifying story, but also raises profound, disturbing questions about the very nature of life and the place of humankind within the cosmos: What does it mean to be human? What responsibilities do we have to each other? How far can we go in tampering with Nature? In our age, filled with news of organ donation genetic engineering, and bio-terrorism, these questions are more relevant than ever.

The War Within

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs995.00 KShs946.00
As violence in Iraq reaches unnerving levels in 2006, a second front in the war rages at the highest levels of the Bush administration. In his fourth book on President George W. Bush, Bob Woodward takes readers deep inside the tensions, secret debates, unofficial backchannels, distrust and determination within the White House, the Pentagon, the State Department, the intelligence agencies and the U.S. military headquarters in Iraq. With unparalleled intimacy and detail, this gripping account of a president at war describes a period of distress and uncertainty within the U.S. government from 2006 through mid-2008. The White House launches a secret strategy review that excludes the military. General George Casey, the commander in Iraq, believes that President Bush does not understand the war and eventually concludes he has lost the president's confidence. The Joint Chiefs of Staff also conduct a secret strategy review that goes nowhere. On the verge of revolt, they worry that the military will be blamed for a failure in Iraq.Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice strongly opposes a surge of additional U.S. forces and confronts the president, who replies that her suggestions would lead to failure. The president keeps his decision to fire Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld from Vice President Dick Cheney until two days before he announces it. A retired Army general uses his high-level contacts to shape decisions about the war, as Bush and Cheney use him to deliver sensitive messages outside the chain of command. For months, the administration's strategy reviews continue in secret, with no deadline and no hurry, in part because public disclosure would harm Republicans in the November 2006 elections. National Security Adviser Stephen J. Hadley tells Rice, "We've got to do it under the radar screen because the electoral season is so hot.""The War Within" provides an exhaustive account of the struggles of General David Petraeus, who takes over in Iraq during one of the bleakest and most violent periods of the war. It reveals how breakthroughs in military operations and surveillance account for much of the progress as violence in Iraq plummets in the middle of 2007.Woodward interviewed key players, obtained dozens of never-before-published documents, and had nearly three hours of exclusive interviews with President Bush. The result is a stunning, firsthand history of the years from mid-2006, when ISBN:2147483647 Author:Bob Woodward

So, then. You want a story and I will tell you one... Afghanistan, 1952. Abdullah and his sister Pari live with their father and stepmother in the small village of Shadbagh. Their father, Saboor, is constantly in search of work and they struggle together through poverty and brutal winters. To Abdullah, Pari - as beautiful and sweet-natured as the fairy for which she was named - is everything. More like a parent than a brother, Abdullah will do anything for her, even trading his only pair of shoes for a feather for her treasured collection. Each night they sleep together in their cot, their heads touching, their limbs tangled. One day the siblings journey across the desert to Kabul with their father. Pari and Abdullah have no sense of the fate that awaits them there, for the event which unfolds will tear their lives apart; sometimes a finger must be cut to save the hand. Crossing generations and continents, moving from Kabul, to Paris, to San Francisco, to the Greek island of Tinos, with profound wisdom, depth, insight and compassion, Khaled Hosseini writes about the bonds that define us and shape our lives, the ways in which we help our loved ones in need, how the choices we make resonate through history and how we are often surprised by the people closest to us.

Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens

Books, Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs1,200.00 KShs990.00
Brief Summary The story of the orphan Oliver, who runs away from the workhouse only to be taken in by a den of thieves, shocked readers when it was first published. Dickens's tale of childhood innocence beset by evil depicts the dark criminal underworld of a London peopled by vivid and memorable characters — the arch-villain Fagin, the artful Dodger, the menacing Bill Sikes and the prostitute Nancy. Combining elements of Gothic Romance, the Newgate Novel and popular melodrama, in Oliver Twist Dickens created an entirely new kind of fiction, scathing in its indictment of a cruel society, and pervaded by an unforgettable sense of threat and mystery. This is the first critical edition to use the serial text of 1837-9, presenting Oliver Twist as it appeared to its earliest readers. It includes Dickens's 1841 introduction and 1850 preface, the original illustrations and a glossary of contemporary slang.
