THE DJINN OF BAKAARAHA MARKET

Fiction and Non Fiction
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,300.00
Bakaaraha Market in Mogadishu is a world of noise, dust, color, and constant motion—where fortunes rise and fall in a single day. But beneath the shouting of traders and the clatter of goods lies another world entirely. A world only a few can see. A world of djinn. Thirteen-year-old Yare has lived most of his life inside the market, sleeping between stalls and surviving on odd jobs. He believes he has seen everything—until the morning a shadowy figure with amber eyes sits on Eedo Hawo’s tea counter and speaks to him. Terrified yet curious, Yare is pulled into a hidden struggle between invisible spirits and powerful traders who rely on djinn to secure wealth, sabotage rivals, and ignite fear. The most dangerous of them all is The Merchant of Smoke, a djinn entity who thrives on chaos and secrets. With the help of Zuraale—a playful but unpredictable young djinn—and the wisdom of a blind tea-seller who knows more than she reveals, Yare begins to understand the cost of these supernatural bargains. But every choice he makes has consequences. Every favor he performs strengthens a force that could consume the entire market. As tensions rise and the market spirals toward catastrophe, Yare must confront both human greed and spiritual darkness. He learns that courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to stand anyway—even when you are small, alone, and trembling. The Djinn of Bakaaraha Market is a gripping, emotionally rich tale of survival, faith, and the unseen battles fought in the shadows of Somali life. It blends fantasy with cultural realism to create a story that is both wildly imaginative and deeply human.

In a world where memory spirals beneath the surface of the land, two quiet travelers—Toma and Lami—walk a path shaped not by destination, but by stillness. They are not heroes. They carry no prophecy. But the echoes of what was and what might be hummed through their steps. As they journey across hush-fields, spiral vaults, and wordless clearings, they begin to learn: the land does not remember what you say, only how you listen. Where the Echoes Sleep is a lyrical and meditative novel about presence, letting go, and the invisible threads that hold us to the world—and to each other. Silent Betrayal: Love, Lies, and Hidden Truths

Fiction
KShs1,500.00 KShs1,300.00
The quietest lies are often the most dangerous. Amara Ndele thought she had found forever in David Kamau, the man who lit up her world with charm and devotion. But behind his promises and lingering kisses hides a secret heavy enough to shatter everything they built together. What begins as a tender love story in the heart of Nairobi soon unravels into a tale of betrayal, deception, and survival. When a shadowy stranger warns Amara of truths David has buried, her life takes a sharp turn. Drawn from the bustling city to the alluring yet treacherous coast of Mombasa, she finds herself at the center of a dangerous game. Each revelation forces her to question not only David's love but also her own strength. As lies collide with passion, Amara must navigate a labyrinth of half-truths, whispered warnings, and a past that refuses to stay hidden. With her heart divided and danger closing in, she faces an impossible choice: cling to the love that defines her or confront the silence that has been killing her slowly. Silent Betrayal: Love, Lies, and Hidden Truths is more than a romance; it is a psychological drama pulsing with suspense and emotional intensity. Perfect for readers who crave page-turning passion mixed with mystery, it explores the delicate balance between trust and truth, desire and deception, love and loss. Every secret has its price. Every silence leaves its scar. And sometimes, redemption comes not in love's embrace, but in learning to set it free.

The Hired Man by Aminatta Forna

Books, International Bestsellers
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,790.00
The new novel from the winner of the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize, The Hired Man is a taut, powerful novel of a small town and its dark wartime secrets, unwittingly brought into the light by a family of outsiders. Aminatta Forna has established herself as one of our most perceptive and uncompromising chroniclers of war and the way it reverberates, sometimes imperceptibly, in the daily lives of those touched by it. With The Hired Man, she has delivered a tale of a Croatian village after the War of Independence, and a family of newcomers who expose its secrets. Duro is off on a morning’s hunt when he sees something one rarely does in Gost: a strange car. Later that day, he overhears its occupants, a British woman, Laura, and her two children, who have taken up residence in a house Duro knows well. He offers his assistance getting their water working again, and soon he is at the house every day, helping get it ready as their summer cottage, and serving as Laura’s trusted confidant. But the other residents of Gost are not as pleased to have the interlopers, and as Duro and Laura’s daughter Grace uncover and begin to restore a mosaic in the front that has been plastered over, Duro must be increasingly creative to shield the family from the town’s hostility, and his own past with the house’s former occupants. As the inhabitants of Gost go about their days, working, striving to better themselves and their town, and arguing, the town’s volatile truths whisper ever louder. A masterpiece of storytelling haunted by lost love and a restrained menace, this novel recalls Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee and Anil’s Ghost by Michael Ondaatje. The Hired Man confirms Aminatta Forna as one of our most important writers.

Nervous Conditions by Tsitsi Dangarembga

Books, African Interest
KShs2,390.00 KShs2,190.00
A modern classic in the African literary canon and voted in the Top Ten Africa’s 100 Best Books of the 20th Century, this novel brings to the politics of decolonization theory the energy of women’s rights. An extraordinarily well-crafted work, this book is a work of vision. Through its deft negotiation of race, class, gender and cultural change, it dramatizes the ‘nervousness’ of the ‘postcolonial’ conditions that bedevil us still. In Tambu and the women of her family, we African women see ourselves, whether at home or displaced, doing daily battle with our changing world with a mixture of tenacity, bewilderment and grace.

An exciting literary debut: the unflinching and powerful story of a young girl's journey out of Zimbabwe and to America. Darling is only ten years old, and yet she must navigate a fragile and violent world. Before their homes were destroyed by paramilitary policemen, before the school closed, before the fathers left for dangerous jobs abroad. But Darling has a chance to escape: she has an aunt in America. She travels to this new land in search of America's famous abundance only to find that her options as an immigrant are perilously few. Cry the Beloved Country by Alan Paton

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,790.00
Cry, the Beloved Country, the most famous and important novel in South Africa’s history, was an immediate worldwide bestseller in 1948. Alan Paton’s impassioned novel about a black man’s country under white man’s law is a work of searing beauty. Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be too moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much. The eminent literary critic Lewis Gannett wrote, "We have had many novels from statesmen and reformers, almost all bad; many novels from poets, almost all thin. In Alan Paton’s Cry, the Beloved Country the statesman, the poet and the novelist meet in a unique harmony.” Cry, the Beloved Country is the deeply moving story of the Zulu pastor Stephen Kumalo and his son, Absalom, set against the background of a land and a people riven by racial injustice. Remarkable for its lyricism, unforgettable for character and incident, Cry, the Beloved Country is a classic work of love and hope, courage and endurance, born of the dignity of man.

The Sex Lives of African Women uniquely amplifies individual women from across the African continent and its global diaspora, as they speak of their diverse experiences of sex, sexualities and relationships. Many of the women who tell their stories in this collection recall the journeys they have travelled in order to own their own sexualities. They do this by grappling with experiences of child sexual abuse, resisting the religious edicts of their childhood, and by asserting their sexual power. From finding queer community in Egypt to living a polyamorous life in Senegal to understanding the intersectionality of religion and pleasure in Cameroon to choosing to leave relationships that no longer serve them, these narratives are as individual and illuminating as the women who share them. Desert Children by Waris Dirie

Books, African Interest
KShs1,600.00 KShs1,400.00
U.N. Special Ambassador Waris Dirie was born to a family of tribal nomads in Somalia. She told her story—enduring female circumcision, fleeing through the desert, and, improbably, becoming a top model—in her first book, Desert Flower. In Desert Dawn, she wrote about her return to Somalia and her work as a U.N. Special Ambassador against FGM (female genital mutilation). Her latest book recounts her investigations into the practice of FGM in Europe—it is estimated that as many as 500,000 women and girls have undergone FGM or are at risk. Here are the voices of women who have felt emboldened by Waris Dirie’s courage.

No Longer at Ease by Chinua Achebe

Books, African Interest
KShs890.00 KShs790.00
The second book in Achebe’s "African trilogy”: A classic story of personal and moral struggle as well as turbulent social conflict. When Obi Okonkwo—grandson of Okonkwo, the main character in Things Fall Apart—returns to Nigeria from England in the 1950s, his foreign education separates him from his African roots. He’s becoming a part of a ruling elite whose corruption he finds repugnant. Forced to choose between traditional values and the demands of a changing world, he finds himself trapped between the expectations of his family, his village, and the larger society around him. With unequaled clarity and poignancy, Chinua Achebe’s No Longer at Ease remains a brilliant statement of the challenges facing Nigeria today.

Desert Dawn by Waris Dirie

Books, African Interest
KShs1,600.00 KShs1,400.00
Fashion model, UN ambassador, and courageous spirit, Waris Dirie is a remarkable woman. Born into a family of tribal desert nomads in Somalia, she told her story in the worldwide bestseller Desert Flower: enduring female circumcision at the age of 5; running away through the desert at 12 to escape an arranged marriage; being discovered by photographer Terence Donovan as she worked as a cleaner in London; and becoming a top fashion model. Although she fled Somalia, she never forgot the country or the family that shaped her. Desert Dawn is Waris Dirie’s profoundly moving account of her return to her homeland. As an international model, Waris Dirie was the face of Revlon. In 1997, as part of its campaign to eliminate female genital mutilation, the United Nations appointed her Special Ambassador for Women’s Rights in Africa. She now lives in New York with her son.

The Cape Cod Bicycle War and Other Stories by Billy Kahora

Books, African Interest
KShs1,990.00
The Cape Cod Bicycle War explores the wild promises of city life as seen for the first time; and its brutality once one has settled in. The author explores the lives of drunks and zealots, farmers and whistle-blowers, locals and migrants, rich and poor. Kahora’s visceral writing style coupled with his typical urbane Kenyans, is not very different from his personality. The wry sense of humour in his stories came out during the book launch where he did a reading. He is unapologetically Kenyan in his description of personal experiences that also poked fun at society. The short stories are sequenced in respective order of their setting in the history of the country. The first story, We are Here Because We are Here, is a flashback to an era gone, in a rural setting as opposed to the rest of the stories in the collection which are set in a more urbane setting marked by excesses of indulgence, religion and the rat race. The story serves as a primer to life in pre-colonial times juxtaposed with current life as narrated to a young man by his ailing grandfather. It tackles natural disasters like floods with a background story of how these disasters came about as a result of exploitation by the colonisers in the Scramble for Africa. It has great historical depth, testament to Kahora's industriousness as a researcher. Set on the Coast of Kenya, it explores the history of the Pokomo community of Tana River County, who we learn hail from the Comoros. It also explores the flooding of the Tana River, which causes starvation and displacement of families.

The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna

Books, African Interest
KShs2,000.00 KShs1,790.00
In contemporary Sierra Leone, a devastating civil war has left an entire populace with secrets to keep. In the capital hospital, a gifted young surgeon is plagued by demons that are beginning to threaten his livelihood. Elsewhere in the hospital lies a dying man who was young during the country’s turbulent postcolonial years and has stories to tell that are far from heroic. As past and present intersect in the buzzing city, these men are drawn unwittingly closer by a British psychologist with good intentions, and into the path of one woman at the center of their stories. A work of breathtaking writing and rare wisdom, The Memory of Love seamlessly weaves together two generations of African life to create a story of loss, absolution, and the indelible effects of the past—and, in the end, the very nature of love.
