Children of the Broken Calabash by MASELA OHOKO

Bakaaraha Market in Mogadishu is a world of noise, dust, color, and constant motion—where fortunes rise and fall in a single day. But beneath the shouting of traders and the clatter of goods lies another world entirely. A world only a few can see. A world of djinn. Thirteen-year-old Yare has lived most of his life inside the market, sleeping between stalls and surviving on odd jobs. He believes he has seen everything—until the morning a shadowy figure with amber eyes sits on Eedo Hawo’s tea counter and speaks to him. Terrified yet curious, Yare is pulled into a hidden struggle between invisible spirits and powerful traders who rely on djinn to secure wealth, sabotage rivals, and ignite fear. The most dangerous of them all is The Merchant of Smoke, a djinn entity who thrives on chaos and secrets. With the help of Zuraale—a playful but unpredictable young djinn—and the wisdom of a blind tea-seller who knows more than she reveals, Yare begins to understand the cost of these supernatural bargains. But every choice he makes has consequences. Every favor he performs strengthens a force that could consume the entire market. As tensions rise and the market spirals toward catastrophe, Yare must confront both human greed and spiritual darkness. He learns that courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to stand anyway—even when you are small, alone, and trembling. The Djinn of Bakaaraha Market is a gripping, emotionally rich tale of survival, faith, and the unseen battles fought in the shadows of Somali life. It blends fantasy with cultural realism to create a story that is both wildly imaginative and deeply human.
