Description

A project of the Young Africans Leadership Academy (YALA) Library and Press ‘The National Discourse’ Series is a guided philosophical inquiry centered on the nature structure and composition of African States and societies with a view to unearth the persisting structural contradictions deeply underlain within the institutions that hinder the efforts of nation-building resulting in endemic chaos and conflicts that further dwarfs progress and development in Africa.

Premised as it were on the thesis that these structural contradictions are by-products of the aborted process of conceiving a nation from the colonial womb under general conditions of depravity and desperation, thus complicating the eventual identity of the new nation and endeavoring to create an impossible balance between the desires, ambitions and aspirations of the new nation and the overwhelming pressures of the former masters to retain control of vital resources. The contemporary African states are thus, in large part, a compromise product of both a people taking pride in the fullness of the armor that is their long-standing history, tradition and culture, and an imposing foreign ideology that is on the one hand the relic of an era of subjugation and exploitation and on the other hand the standard template for the nation’s institutions and the pen that outlines the roadmap for the nation’s future.

This series seeks to provoke a meaningful conversation and constructive debate that will illuminate the path out of these structural contradictions by crafting a strong national identity, that is often a product of responsive and responsible political institutions, built from the material of local environment and inspired by designs that echo a deeply felt and genuinely appreciated historical, cultural and ideological solidarity among the different groups of the nation. Presenting a workable formula of cooperation in a common cause, equitable sharing of the available resources and the fair distribution of the wealth of the nation, are the fundamental precursors to a well-organized political system and the foundational bricks for a nation that can boost of prosperity and longevity, and the primary object that informs the undertaking of The National Discourse project.

OMOKA: Scramble for the Hustler Utopia by Ibrahim Atingo

Sociology
KShs3,000.00 KShs2,500.00
On the sociological level, it is earnestly intended, by shining the spotlight on phenomena that have so far been arid of formal attention, to raise awareness, and by so doing, make a slight contribution in the propagation of social order. We explore the life of the hustler, a social reject by institutional design, because we deem it necessary to destigmatize his being and dignify his status in society. Left unchecked, the present turmoil could easily spiral out of control, both at the personal level of individuals and the social level of interpersonal interactions.

Haunted by a past that has kept her from Nairobi for over three years, Leena returns home to discover her family unchanged: her father is still a staunch patriot dreaming of a better country; her mother is still unwilling or unable to let go of the past; and her brother spends his days provoking the establishment as a political activist. When Leena meets a local Kikuyu artist whose past is linked to her own, the two begin a secret affair—one that forces Leena to again question her place in a country she once called home. Interlinked with Leena’s story is that of Jeffery: a corrupt policeman burdened with his own angers and regrets, and whose questionable actions have unexpected and catastrophic consequences for those closest to him. Who Will Catch Us as We Fall is an epic look at the politics and people of Kenya.

Through My African Eyes by Jeff Koinange

Books, African Interest
Rated 5.00 out of 5
KShs3,890.00 KShs3,500.00
"Through My African Eyes!” is a concise narrative covering some of the major players in 20th century African politics. The book is rich with insights into the personal and intellectual underpinnings of many historical events in Africa. Chronicles of some pretty interesting Africans from warlords, soldiers, victims and politicians lend insight into Jeff’s celebrated journalistic style. Through his eyes we are made to understand the role of journalist’s as binders of our social fabric. "Through My African Eyes” is very informative and quite humorous, utilizing a modern quick precise narrative style. He is able to describe complex global geopolitical issues with incisive analysis. The book surf’s one through the experience with speed and historical accuracy. We see the visual the words impart, rather than being stuck in prose. The best part is being able to walk the journey informed by a largely Kenyan perspective. Jeff outlines clearly how biased reportage can splinter any society and promote its disintegration by pandering to people’s lowest instincts. The narrative draws out lesser-known aspects of his life. Jeff’s unblinking examination of his grandfather’s life is historically illuminating and serves as a symbolic bridge between the beginning and the end of colonialism. Jeff is the first African ever to win a Television Emmy and a George Foster Peabody. He merited the Vernon Jarrett Award as well as the prestigious! ‘Prix Bayeux’ for reportage that arrested global crises."

Trailblazer: Breaking Through in Kenya by Peter Kuguru

Books, African Interest
KShs1,900.00 KShs1,500.00
As a child during the Mau Mau Emergency, Peter Kuguru personally witnessed scenes of horrific brutality. He and his family experienced great hardship and upheaval as the British colonial regime acted ruthlessly to crush the freedom movement. As Peter made his way slowly through school at this terrible time, he must have despaired about his future prospects in life. But the euphoria of Independence and the promise it held, coupled with the values of hard work and education insistently drilled into him by his father, encouraged him to dream big. From a young schoolboy paparazzo snapping pictures of his schoolmates for a few cents, to the courageous and far-sighted industrialist who dared to tackle Coca Cola head-on, Peter Kuguru has travelled a trailblazing journey. At the same time he has never forsaken a fundamental, heartfelt personal commitment to improving the welfare of the people of Mathira. It was this dedication that led him to follow his father, a powerful oak of a man, into politics. Now, in this book, for the first time, a candidate in a Kenyan Parliamentary Election discloses the tricks, deceit and skullduggery that tragically characterize campaigns at the grassroots. These corrupt, dirty, evil and underhand maneuvers have transformed our electoral process into a mere travesty of democracy, destroying the credibility of many politicians in the eyes of the trusting wananchi. This fascinating and revealing book has much to teach our budding industrialists, while leaving our political class with a great deal both to be ashamed of and to change radically and immediately.

KShs1,000.00 KShs790.00
The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, written in collaboration with Micere Githae-Mugo, is Ngugi’s response to colonialist writings about the Mau-Mau movement, which traditionally depicted the movement and its leader, Dedan Kimathi, as mentally unbalanced and vicious. Ngugi and his collaborator choose to counter this image with a portrait of Kimathi as a man of great courage and commitment. This was how he was seen by many of the peasants and laborers of Kenya.

UNsilenced by Rasna Warah

Books, African Interest
KShs1,899.00 KShs1,799.00
In a world experiencing increasing conflicts, terrorism and displacement, many people are wondering what the United Nations – the organization established in 1945 to save future generations from the scourge of war – should or could have done to prevent these disasters from escalating. UNsilenced shows that, in fact, the UN has remained a bystander in many of these conflicts and that peace-building efforts have not only been undermined by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, but also by the UN's many agencies and programmes. The book exposes how, under the guise of development, stability and the "war on terror", the UN fails to prevent conflicts in many parts of the world, and in some cases, misleads the public about the scale of a problem. The book also reveals the web of lies, cover-ups, corruption and impunity within the United Nations that has allowed wrongdoing to continue unabated. Many of these acts of wrongdoing occur or continue because the UN fails to protect whistleblowers; on the contrary, most UN whistleblowers experience severe retaliation. UNsilenced describes how whistleblowers have been denied justice within the UN system and how the immunity accorded to UN officials and the conflict of interest inherent in the UN's internal justice system allow the perpetrators of criminal or unethical activities to go unpunished. The book is an urgent call for a serious reform of this bureaucratic, arcane and increasingly politicized organization – because not doing so constitutes a betrayal of the trust invested in it by the people and countries that depend on it.
